How to Play with the Colorful Caterpillar.

Place the Caterpillar mat on a table. Don’t forget to give your caterpillar a name. You have a choice between a number of different games:

Using the Shapes.
Use a white board marker to write in the circles of the caterpillar, either draw a shape and let your child match the shape, the word of a shape: e.g.: triangle, or the amount of sides a shape has: for example a square has four sides, so you would write the number four into the circle, your child must then find a shape with four sides.

Using the Numbers.
You can either write the number word out in the circles, your child must then find the correct number, or use the marker and draw dots inside the circle, your child must then count the dots and find the correct number circle.

Using the flowers.
Write the number into the circles, your child must then find the matching circle by counting the flowers.

Using the alphabet.
Choose ten letters of the alphabet; write these in the caterpillar circles. Let your child find the matching alphabet.

Using the Die.
Cut out, fold and glue the die together. With a white board marker write what you will be practising into the circle of the caterpillar, for example, if you would like to practice the uppercase alphabet, you will write 10 letters into the circles. You can use the flower circles as game pieces for the game. Now take turns rolling the die and moving forward, following the die instructions, who ever finishes first is the winner.

Tip: To keep any of these games interesting try using a point system or a timer system. Mix things up by using shapes, numbers and letters. Laminate the mat so you can use it over again. To give the caterpillar mat a good clean, give it a wipe with a tissue and a dab of rubbing alcohol/surgical spirits.
