How to Play:
Choose a picture card to work with. Place this in front of your child. Spread out the letter circles and help your child match them up to the correct beginning sound picture.

AppleTree Play Dough Maths - Basic maths skills



This is a fun activity for encouraging early and basic maths skills using Apple Scented Play Dough and a set of die. Using this math activity will help your child in areas of counting, subitising, numbers and basic addition and subtraction sums.

There are a number of ways these materials can be adapted for different age groups and abilities in areas of counting, subitising, numbers and basic addition and subtraction sums.
What is subitising?
Subitising refers to immediately knowing how many items lie within a visual scene for a small number of items. It is to have a rapid and confident judgement to know at a glance and without counting to identify the number of items in a group. For example, when a dice is thrown the ob-server at a glance, immediately and accurately knows how many dots lie on the face of the dice without counting.

You will need:
  • Apple scented play dough – Directions on how to make it are given to you.
  • The apple Tree mat
  • A set of Die


How to play.
The apple scented play dough is used to create play dough apples which are placed on the tree depending on the maths activity that is being done.
The Apple Tree Play Dough Maths can be used in a number of ways:

1. Subitising – rolling one or two dice and creating that number with play dough apples on the tree. Move the play dough apples around the tree to find different ways of presenting this number.
2. Counting – rolling one or two dice and counting the number thrown, then re-creating this number again but this time as apples on the play dough tree mat. Children will count and re-count to make sure they have the correct number of apples as thrown on the dice.
3. Addition – this can be done on one or two play dough tree mats. Throw one dice and create this number of play dough apples on the tree. Then roll the dice again and ‘add’ how many more apples to the tree. How many apples are in the tree?
4. Subtraction – This is done a little different to the addition as it only uses 1 dice. Place 6 play dough apples on the tree and then throw one dice. Remove the number of play dough apples from the tree that is shown on the dice. How many play dough apples are left on the tree? For older children this can be done starting with 12 play dough apples on the tree and then subtracting the amounts shown on the two dice.

What you will need:
  • A good idea is to laminate the sheets after printing so that you may use them over again.
  • Print as many island mats/ coins as you need.
  • You will need a white board marker
  • A brad or paper holder for the spinner
  • Scissors, for cutting out the coins and arrows

How to play.

On the Spinner mat, write with a whiteboard marker pen, the words or letters you will be practicing, you don’t have to use all the spaces, you may also add more lines to the spinner for more words/ letters. Write the same words onto the island mats.
Place the Island mats on the floor in a big circle shape; secure them with prestik so they don’t slip around. Place the Pirate Boats “home Base” mat in the middle of the islands. Place each mat far enough apart so your child will be able to make the jump from island to home base boat.

Your job is to spin the spinner and call out the word/letter that the arrow lands on, you child starts by standing in the home base boat and has to jump to the correct word/letter island.

When you spin again, your child will have to jump back to home base each time to get to the correct word/letter; she/he may not jump from island to island.
Each time your child gets the correct answer, he/she gets a gold coin, which you then place on the treasure box mat. In order for the game play to flow nicely, place the gold coins on the treasure box mat instead of handing the coins to your child to keep.

Tip: You may use this game to practice colours, letters, words, emotions, shapes.

If the white board marker does not come off the mats nicely after play, use rubbing alcohol/surgical spirits to remove the white board marker pen.
